Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière

One of the monuments that best represents Lyon.
Towering on the Fourvière hill and overlooking the town of Lyon, the Fourvière Basilica was built at the end of the 19th century by architect Pierre Bossan. The building honours the Virgin Mary, who is represented at the top of the Basilica.
Construction work on the building began in 1872 and ended in 1896. Flanked by four octagonal towers, the Basilica shows a range of styles. The outside, which is relatively plain despite its imposing size, contrasts with the exuberant and opulent inside, of Byzantine influence.
Pass from darkness into the light thanks to the architecture, which is deliberately symbolic.
