The Fête des Lumières or Festival of Lights in Lyon is the best known and most popular festival of Lyon. It brings the year to a stylish close and welcomes in the Christmas season. Four twinkling, sparkling nights bring light, contemporary design and enchantment to the city.
This Lyon tradition began back in 1852. Each household illuminates their windows and balconies to celebrate the Virgin Mary. Rooted in its own history, the Festival of Lights is the expression of a tradition handed down from generation to generation, and one which also showcases the city's fabulous architectural heritage.
During this festival, the world's leading event of this type, up to three million visitors come from around France, Europe and from the furthest corners of the globe to discover and take part in the many events programmed as part of the magical Fête des Lumières in Lyon.
